WINfirst Expands SPATIALinfo Network Inventory Management System

(Denver, Colorado - January 14, 2002) - SPATIALinfo, a specialist supplier of network information solutions, today announced that Denver-based WINfirst had requested it to quickly expand the recent implementation of its core SPATIALnet™ network database system, with the inclusion of its integrated engineering and web access client applications, to underpin the rollout and management of WINfirst's innovative fiber-to-the-home network.

The SPATIALnet engineering client will allow WINfirst to interface its design and engineering workstations directly to a new Oracle®-based Network Inventory Management database, and to enter rules-based design and rollout details of new service areas directly into the database over a high speed WAN connection, using AutoCAD 2000i Map® as the graphics editing client. WINfirst will be able to update and maintain network records on an ongoing basis directly in the Oracle database. This more efficient approach will replace the present method of performing engineering and design in AutoCAD 2000i®, and importing the resulting drawings into the Network Inventory Management system when as-built records are complete. The SPATIALinfo application will deliver design assistance, in-built records entry quality control, radically improved workflow management and reporting, and a consistent automated productivity toolset usable by all of WINfirst's current and future design personnel and contractors.

The SPATIALweb™ client will permit WINfirst's corporate, engineering, construction, IT, marketing and customer service personnel to view and report on the same records, retrieved in real time directly from the database, via a standard browser interface. Authorized users, including field personnel, will be permitted to update attribute data directly in the database from a browser. SPATIALweb will allow field deployed laptop computers with radio communications real time linkage to WINfirst's database to allow immediate updating of records enterprise-wide, as changes are entered in the field. To maximize ease of use, the SPATIALweb client will deliver customized access for specific departments including multiple map views, forms-based views allowing non-graphical read and write access, configurable template reports, and traditional GIS analysis including thematic mapping, all packaged from a common set of components.

“Engineering efficiency, accurate record creation, and rapid and widespread access to the very latest network and rollout information is vital to our success”, said Frank Casazza, President and COO of WINfirst. “SPATIALinfo completed our aggressive two-month stage one schedule on budget, and in record time, and we had no hesitation in moving forward to the next stage. We're expecting significant operational gains to flow quickly from this next release, which will deliver WINfirst a seamless, end-to-end enterprise-wide network design and maintenance solution. SPATIALinfo's speed and skill in understanding and meeting our requirements has been exceptional,” said Mr Casazza.

SPATIALinfo modeled and created WINfirst's Network Inventory Management Oracle database during stage one of the SPATIALnet implementation. Population of the database with WINfirst's existing dataset was fast-tracked using a configuration of SPATIALinfo's AutoCAD migration software which amongst other things rapidly transforms AutoCAD drawing and graphics properties and attribute data into fully modeled relational database information which can be stored in Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server®.

“SPATIALinfo deploys SPATIALnet and SPATIALweb to integrate Autodesk® and Oracle products into a seamless network design and maintenance solution for the enterprise, with built-in quality control and workflow,” said Greg Foster, President of SPATIALinfo. “Our 80% ‘out of the box’ fiber network solution already had the network and landbase object models required, and this allowed us to respond quickly to WINfirst's requirements. The Network Inventory Management System will allow WINfirst to maintain operational and asset integrity over all network elements, by providing a comprehensive inventory and reporting system for the entire network. The engineering and web applications will be implemented within a 4-month phased delivery timeframe, including product configuration, commissioning and training”, said Mr Foster.

WINfirst is building an entirely new fiber optic network that is designed to offer high-speed Internet, digital cable TV and telephone service to every residential neighborhood it serves. The optical link will enable WINfirst to provide an Internet service that will be some 65 times faster than typical 1.5 Mbps high-speed connections offered via T1 or DSL and cable modem today. WINfirst has received regulatory approval to build networks to more than 5 million homes in Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles CA; Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio TX; and Seattle WA.

SPATIALnet is a comprehensive AM/FM/GIS application for capturing, editing and displaying outside plant and inside plant networks, modeled and stored in a relational database. SPATIALnet contains a configurable set of data entry business rules, to store all graphics, connectivity and attributes in Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server as a single, continuous and fully connected network model, and to publish and report real-time status. SPATIALnet unlocks information from traditional single strand engineering, design and mapping systems, unifying the data into one consolidated open architecture RDBMS that can be linked to a variety of applications across an enterprise, allowing the exchange of detailed data, financial modeling, asset tracking and customer queries from a single source platform.
