SPATIALinfo Solves Two-Year Search by City of Renton for CAD and GIS Data Management Solution

(Denver, Colorado - November 20, 2001) - SPATIALinfo, a specialist supplier of network and spatial information solutions, today announced that its SPATIALnet™, SPATIALmover™, SPATIALmodeler™ and SPATIALweb™ products have been selected by the City of Renton, Washington, after more than two year's searching by the City for suitable products to solve its CAD and GIS data management requirements.

E-Terra Inc., the City's primary vendor for CAD software and authorized dealer for SPATIALinfo, drove the local sales effort. E-Terra's Bellevue, WA office, will manage the project integration and on-site support for the City of Renton. SPATIALinfo will supply the software and assist E-Terra with training and implementation.

The City of Renton has over 4 gigabytes of spatially referenced data largely stored and managed as AutoCAD® drawing files, used to prepare maps and analyses in support of its operations. The City has found the proprietary data format to be complex and time-consuming to maintain, often forcing the continual re-creation of subordinate datasets, introducing scope for error and data duplication.

“Our requirements for CAD and GIS data management have been predictable”, said Mr Robert MacOnie, Mapping Coordinator Utility Systems, City of Renton. “We wanted to store the spatial component of our data, coordinates and topology in the City's Oracle® database; to access and maintain the data using our existing investment in AutoCAD Map®, Oracle and Internet Explorer®; to manage the data down at the element level rather than as a whole; and, to maintain a history of change to the data, allowing us to examine the data as it was at any point in time.”

“After searching for years, as well as some internal development to try and achieve our needs, we recently learned of SPATIALinfo‘s suite of products through our CAD vendor, E-Terra”, said Mr MacOnie. “We found that SPATIALinfo was the only vendor who could meet all our needs, and who could supply additional features, including the ability to develop, maintain and publish proposed changes or options through its Job Management System. This not only allows for the use of the system in governmental activities such as the subdivision review process, but for examination of the impact of alternative designs on the City's water, sewer, storm and transportation systems while fully maintaining the integrity of the database”.

“SPATIALinfo provides a unique software solution suite,” said Steve Colligan, President of Alaska headquartered E-Terra. “Their comprehensive AM/FM/GIS application, SPATIALnet, captures, edits and displays outside plant and inside plant networks, modeled and stored in a relational database.” Fully integrated with AutoCAD Map for graphics editing, SPATIALnet enables clients to work in an environment they are accustomed to. “Our customers have seen the real power of SPATIALnet, as it empowers an organization,” Colligan continued. “It contains a configurable set of data entry business rules, to store all graphics, connectivity and attributes in Oracle® or Microsoft SQL Server® as a single, continuous and fully connected network model. No other software tools on the market have the strength of SPATIALinfo's solution.”

SPATIALinfo will help to model and create the Oracle database that will operate as the warehouse for the City's spatial data. SPATIALinfo will use a configuration of its specialized migration software, which, amongst other things rapidly transforms AutoCAD drawing and graphics properties and attribute data into fully modelled relational database information at the element level.

SPATIALweb, the SPATIALinfo web browser integration solution, will allow City personnel to view and report on GIS and CAD data retrieved in real time directly from the database, via a standard browser interface, providing an enterprise-wise spatial data access solution. Authorized users will be permitted to update attribute data directly in the database from the browser or a forms-based interface.

“Most CAD and GIS software still uses proprietary formats for the storage and manipulation of spatial data, with data edits treating the data as a whole rather than at the element level”, said Greg Foster, President of SPATIALinfo. “This is the antithesis of modern enterprise data management. SPATIALinfo's approach is to provide the solution and integration tools to allow CAD and GIS Managers to manage spatial data at the element level, just like any other kind of corporate data. We are delighted to be able to work with E-Terra Inc. and the City of Renton to place the City at the forefront of CAD and GIS data management capability”, said Mr Foster.
